New Parkinson’s Nurse Specialist Announced for Mayo

A new specialist nursing service for people living with Parkinson’s disease has been announced for County Mayo, marking an important step forward in improving local access to care and support.

Parkinson’s Ireland confirmed that a dedicated Parkinson’s Nurse Specialist will now serve the Mayo region, helping to provide expert guidance, education, and ongoing support for people diagnosed with the condition, as well as their families and carers.

Improving access to specialist care

The new role has been taken up by Laura Niepage, an experienced Parkinson’s Nurse Specialist who previously worked within the NHS in the UK. Her appointment brings valuable clinical experience and specialist knowledge to the west of Ireland, where access to dedicated neurological support has been limited.

Parkinson’s Nurse Specialists play a key role in helping people manage symptoms, understand treatment options, and maintain quality of life. They also act as an important link between patients, hospital consultants, GPs, and community services.

Supporting people living with Parkinson’s in the West

Parkinson’s disease is one of the fastest-growing neurological conditions worldwide, and the need for specialist services continues to increase. Having a local nurse specialist means that people in Mayo and surrounding counties will have improved access to advice, monitoring, and personalised support without needing to travel long distances for care.

The new service reflects ongoing efforts to expand supports across Ireland and ensure that people living with Parkinson’s can access the help they need, regardless of where they live.

A positive step for patients and families

For individuals and families affected by Parkinson’s, access to specialist nursing care can make a significant difference in day-to-day life. From medication guidance to emotional support, these services help people stay independent for longer and manage the challenges of the condition more effectively.

The introduction of a Parkinson’s Nurse Specialist in Mayo is being welcomed as a positive development for the region and highlights the importance of continued investment in neurological services across Ireland.
